Material Choice
Why titanium, specifically
Titanium's density of 4.5 g/cm³ is the key variable. Heavier than aluminium but lighter than steel, a titanium diaphragm of equivalent diameter to an aluminium one resonates at a lower fundamental frequency — pushing Fs down to approximately 45 Hz without requiring a larger driver. At bass frequencies where titanium is used here, its high internal damping also prevents the slow, bloomy decay that plagues polymer diaphragms. Bass arrives as an event, not a smear.
The Breakup Problem — Solved
Titanium's liability is our crossover point
Titanium diaphragms have a notorious failure mode: above ~1–2 kHz they enter breakup modes and ring like a bell — producing the "metallic glare" that has plagued titanium tweeters for decades. The wH105's DSP crossover eliminates this entirely. The Ti driver receives signal only below 350 Hz. It never reaches a frequency where breakup modes are audible. Titanium's liability becomes irrelevant by design.
Transient Character
Fast. Controlled. Articulate.
Titanium's high Young's modulus (116 GPa) means the diaphragm resists deformation under load — it accelerates and decelerates as commanded by the voice coil with minimal lag. This is why B&O's H95 and H100 titanium drivers are consistently described as punchy rather than warm. Bass texture — the string attack on a bass guitar, the mechanical click of a kick drum — is preserved rather than washed out.
Voice Coil
Copper wound on Kapton, 8 Ω section
The Ti driver's voice coil is wound from oxygen-free copper on a Kapton former, rated to 200 °C continuous. Its contribution to the headphone's combined 18 Ω impedance is the dominant section — the CF driver sits in series on the inner circuit. Linear Xmax of ±3.8 mm is generous for a headphone driver, enabling the low-frequency extension the port architecture demands without exceeding mechanical limits at high SPL.

The carbon fibre

Material Properties
Carbon fibre — why it extends so high
Carbon fibre's Young's modulus (~230 GPa) is approximately twice that of titanium at roughly one-third the density (1.6 g/cm³). This extreme stiffness-to-mass ratio keeps the diaphragm moving as a single rigid body — pistonically — well into the upper treble. Conventional polymer cones begin flexing at 3–5 kHz. The CF driver here remains pistonic to approximately 16 kHz, beyond which a gentle rolloff occurs. No separate tweeter is needed.
The Retuning
From XM-series to wH105
Sony's original XM5/XM6 CF driver carries a consumer V-shaped tuning — elevated bass and treble shelf, recessed midrange. This is entirely a voicing choice imposed via surround geometry, spider compliance, and DSP — not a material limitation. For the wH105, the surround stiffness is increased (less excursion needed above the crossover point), spider compliance retargeted, and the DSP applies a flat response curve from 350 Hz. The same diaphragm, reborn as a precision instrument.
Coaxial Loading
It rides with the Ti driver
When the Ti driver makes a large bass excursion, the CF driver assembly physically travels with it — rigidly coupled at the Ti cone apex. The CF driver then makes its own independent high-frequency excursions on top of this motion. The key is that both the Ti's large, slow movements and the CF's small, fast movements radiate from the same acoustic axis. Your ear receives bass and mids from the same spatial point simultaneously — no phase offset, no time smear.

The port is not a compromise. It is a bass tuner, an ANC microphone channel, a mic housing, a wind shield, and a design detail — simultaneously.

Bass Extension
Why the port pushes bass below 30 Hz
A sealed headphone's bass rolloff is dictated by the driver's Fs and the ear cavity spring. The bass reflex port adds a second resonant system — a Helmholtz resonator tuned to Fb ≈ 28 Hz. At this frequency, the air column in the port tube resonates in phase with the driver's output, effectively extending bass radiation to frequencies the driver alone would struggle with. The result is usable bass response to 25 Hz without DSP-boosted distortion.
The ANC Innovation
Physics does the filtering before DSP touches it
A microphone inside the port tube hears only low-frequency noise — the port geometry physically prevents high-frequency content from entering. The Ti driver's known output is subtracted digitally. What remains is pure external bass-range ingress. This spectrally pre-separated signal is fed to the cascaded ANC pipeline as Stage 0, eliminating the need for the feedforward mics to process low-frequency content at all. Each subsequent mic stage receives an already-cleaner picture.
Aesthetic Integrity
The hole as a design element
Every other headphone on the market punctures the outer cup face with visible microphone grilles. The wH105's outer cup surface is completely uninterrupted — a continuous Ceraluminesium shell. The port exits at the centre of the outer cup face, its grille laser-etched in a radial micro-perforation pattern that catches light like a diffraction grating. Under UV illumination in doped colorways, the perforations glow. The component that does the most engineering work is also the most photogenic part of the product.
Wind Shielding
Passive rejection before ANC activates
Wind noise is the most common failure mode of outdoor ANC. Exposed microphones on the cup surface experience pressure fluctuations from air turbulence that the DSP must identify and suppress before it can process real noise. Mic A inside the port tube experiences dramatically reduced wind exposure — the tube geometry slows and diffuses airflow before it reaches the mic element. Sony and Bose spend significant processing budget on software wind detection; the wH105 gets passive wind rejection for free.

Port Mic Array — 3 MEMS, sub-100 Hz, physics pre-filtered
One primary MEMS mic sits inside the bass reflex port tube, The port geometry itself isolates low-frequency ingress. Port geometry physically bandpasses all three to sub-100 Hz — no frequency above that range reaches any of them. Ti driver output is subtracted. Residual is pure external bass-range ingress. Passively wind-shielded by the tube. The three-mic arrangement enables triangulated source separation of low-frequency noise at the port.

Feedforward Array — 5 digital MEMS, mid & high spatial capture
Six digital MEMS mics cover the full cup rim perimeter, plus two wide-area MEMS on the toward-front and toward-back cup face surfaces. Two proximity MEMS sit under the ear pad — capturing what gets past the ear seal before the feedback stage sees it. Stage 0's bass-range output is pre-subtracted before Klangkerne processes this array. Combined with AI spatial filtering, the array builds a real-time 3D model of the noise field around the wearer.

2
In-ear Feedback Mic — error correction on near-zero residual
By the time signal reaches the feedback mic inside the ear cup, stages 0 and 1 have addressed the full noise spectrum. The feedback mic corrects residual error on a near-zero signal, operating with maximum precision and minimum latency. The Ti driver's 25 Hz extension means ANC anti-noise is reproduced accurately at the exact frequencies where the port allows ingress.

Dual-IR Proximity
Two infrared proximity sensors per cup fire inward and outward simultaneously — detecting whether the cup is against an ear, resting on a neck, or set down on a surface. Response latency is under 50 ms.
Capacitive Skin Contact
The lambskin ear pad lining carries a conductive mesh layer. Actual skin contact is detected independently of proximity — eliminating false triggers from objects or surfaces resting against the cup.
6-Axis IMU
A 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer track head orientation, movement velocity, and nodding gestures. Used for head tracking in spatial audio, call control gestures, and detecting whether the headphone is being worn or carried.
Acoustic Presence Sensing
The in-ear feedback mic continuously analyses the acoustic signature of the ear cavity. A sealed ear sounds acoustically distinct from an open cup. This enables the system to detect off-ear state even when IR and capacitive sensors are obstructed.
Speak-to-Pause
When the voice beamform mic array detects the wearer's own voice starting at close range, playback fades and ambient transparency activates within 200 ms. Speech cessation for 3 seconds restores the previous state automatically.
EarSense II™ — Live Fit
Sony's EarSense technology, extended for the wH105's coaxial driver architecture. Bass seal quality, ANC optimiser, and HRTF profile are recalibrated in real time as the headphone settles on the ear — every wear, every time.

IP68 + IP69.
Two ratings. One standard.

Most headphones carry IP54 or IP55. The wH105 carries IP68 and IP69 simultaneously — the same dual certification found on OPPO's Find X8 Ultra and reserved for devices that must survive industrial water exposure.

IP68

Why IP69 matters for the wH105
The port grille and mic apertures are the typical waterproofing failure points in headphones. The wH105's Ceraluminesium port grille is water-impermeable at the material level — the 0.3 mm perforations are sealed by acoustic damping mesh rated to IP69 jet pressures. All microphone apertures carry internal acoustic damping rated to the same standard.
OPPO SilCa battery — waterproofing synergy
Silicon Carbon battery cells are inherently more thermally stable than Li-Ion — they do not require the same thermal runaway pressure relief venting. This allows the wH105 to achieve a fully sealed SilCa battery compartment without compromise, enabling IP69 certification that conventional Li-Ion designs struggle to achieve.

Silicon Carbon.
One per cup.

Two independent Silicon Carbon batteries — one inside each ear cup — deliver total capacity that Li-Ion cells of equivalent volume cannot match, with charge speeds that redefine what fast means for audio wearables.

Why Silicon Carbon over Li-Ion
More ions. Less heat. Longer life.
Silicon Carbon anodes can accommodate approximately 10× more lithium ions per unit volume than conventional graphite anodes. This translates directly to higher energy density in the same physical package — or equivalent capacity in a smaller cell. For headphone batteries where volume is tightly constrained by ear cup geometry, SilCa unlocks substantially more capacity than Li-Ion at the same form factor.
Dual Independent Cells
Left cup + right cup — redundant power
Each ear cup contains its own SilCa cell, managed independently by the 06E efficiency core. If one cell reaches a lower charge state, load balancing redirects processing to the fuller cell. The headphone continues operating in a degraded but functional mode even if one cell is depleted — a feature impossible with a single centralised battery.
80W SuperVOOC
Full charge in under 35 minutes
OPPO's SuperVOOC protocol negotiates charging voltage and current with the headphone's charging IC over USB-C Thunderbolt 6. Both cells charge simultaneously at 80W total — 40W per cup. From flat, the wH105 reaches full charge in approximately 32 minutes. Ten minutes on SuperVOOC delivers approximately 14 hours of playback — enough for a transatlantic flight from a boarding lounge charge.
50W AirVOOC Wireless
Fastest wireless charging in a headphone
AirVOOC at 50W is the first wireless charging implementation of this power level in a consumer headphone. Both cups charge simultaneously from the AirVOOC stand. Full charge wirelessly in approximately 42 minutes. Compatible with Qi2 at reduced 15W for third-party charging pads.
