02 — Physical Architecture
LAYER STACK — BACKPLANE TO VIEWER
L1
HC GaN Backlight — UV (MCY Layer)
Hollow Cylindrical GaN LEDs. UV excitation wavelength for Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow quantum dot conversion. 128×64 dimming zones — zone gating is power management only, not contrast control.
Backlight
L2
MCY Quantum Dot Emission Layer
Magenta, Cyan, Yellow QD conversion. Three subpixels per pixel. UV-pumped. Full-spectrum primary coverage alongside RGB layer. Each primary targets the purest spectral emission achievable.
Emission
L3
Collimation Microlens Array (MCY)
Collimates MCY emission for clean vertical passthrough into the RGB layer above. Prevents angular bleed across RGB subpixel geometry. Critical for preserving fourth-subpixel fidelity.
Optics
L4
HC GaN Backlight — Z-Blue Optimized (RGB Layer)
Blue-spectrum HC GaN, spectrally tuned for Red and Green QD pump efficiency (Z-LED architecture). Physical cutouts at each pixel's fourth-subpixel position allow collimated MCY light to pass through unobstructed. 128×64 dimming zones, independent from MCY backlight.
Backlight
L5
RGB Quantum Dot Emission Layer + MCY Passthrough Subpixel
Red, Green, Blue QD conversion — three subpixels. Fourth subpixel is a transparent passthrough aperture for collimated MCY output from L2/L3. The Meridian controller presents these as a unified 6-primary pixel to the rendering pipeline.
Emission
L6
MEMS Micro-Shutter Array — 16K Native
Full 16K resolution electromechanical shutter array. Operates per-pixel. Provides absolute black by physically occluding emission — no light bleed, no halo, no blooming. Contrast ceiling: effectively infinite at pixel level. Also serves as the privacy-mode gate for designated wide-angle pixels.
Contrast
L7
Dual-Mode Viewing Microlens Array
Interlaced checkerboard lens structure — wide and narrow pixels alternate 1:1 across the full panel (same approach as Samsung's privacy display architecture). Wide pixels expand the viewing cone for collaborative use; narrow pixels concentrate output for privacy. Wide pixels can be individually shuttered via L6 MEMS. Brightness compensates digitally via narrow-pixel drive boost. Camera-class XCD-LED SKUs omit this layer entirely — single optimized lens only.

Primary Selection Logic (Meridian)
  • Each target color is mapped to the nearest pure primaries on the 6-primary gamut hull — not the nearest RGB approximation.
  • Orange → R + Y (avoids cross-layer overhead if energetically favorable).
  • Colors equidistant from two primaries → experimentally calibrated split per target luminance. Factory LUT.
  • Above ~10K nits sustained → tandem mode activates both layers additively for the same color, up to 38K cd/m².
  • No primary combination uses a suboptimal route when a purer single-layer route exists.
Layer Splitting Pipeline
  • AV2-compressed 10-bit signal decoded on-panel by Meridian.
  • Decoded frame split into RGB drive signal and MCY drive signal per-pixel.
  • MCY passthrough subpixel in L5 carries final MCY contribution as a unified pixel component.
  • FRC operates across both layers simultaneously to achieve 20-bit effective depth at full 250 kHz.
  • BFI replaces FRC; black frames injected at 2× input cadence. Mutually exclusive.

† Tandem efficiency crossover: dual-layer at 50% each is more power-efficient than single-layer at 100% above ~10K nits. Tandem activates automatically above this threshold. — †† 38K shipped figure is validated at factory against the 128K test ceiling; not a marketing extrapolation.
Backlight Type
Hollow Cylindrical GaN
HC geometry for improved light uniformity and thermal distribution vs. planar GaN. Independent arrays per emission layer.
Dimming Zones
128 × 64
8,192 zones at 18 inches. Power management only — contrast is handled by MEMS shutter (L6), not zone dimming. Zones that feed MEMS-blocked pixels are reduced to idle.
MCY Backlight Spectrum
UV-band
Optimized for Magenta, Cyan, Yellow QD pump wavelengths.
RGB Backlight Spectrum
Z-Blue Optimized
Spectrally tuned blue for R and G QD conversion efficiency. Physical cutouts at MCY passthrough subpixel positions.
05 — Temporal Modes
FRC vs BFI — MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE TEMPORAL MODES
FRC MODE
Color Depth Priority
Frame Rate Control operates across both emission layers at 250 kHz native. Each FRC application adds +2 bits of perceived depth via a 4-subframe dithering cycle — the same mechanism by which 8-bit+FRC panels achieve 10-bit perception today. Applied to XCD-LED's 20-bit tandem baseline (10-bit × 2 layers), FRC yields approximately ~22-bit perceived color depth.

Best for: color-critical work, photography, video grading, static or slow-motion content where motion blur is not a priority concern.
BFI MODE
Motion Clarity Priority
Black Frame Insertion via ASUS DIAC co-development. Every second frame at 250 kHz native is a complete black frame — effectively halving phosphor/QD persistence and eliminating motion blur at the panel level. Implemented via MEMS shutter array (zero emission, no backlight PWM artifacts).

Best for: high-framerate gaming, competitive use, fast-motion cinema. FRC is disabled; color depth returns to 10-bit input.
06 — Viewing Optics & Privacy
INTERLACED DUAL-MODE MICROLENS & MEMS PRIVACY SYSTEM
Pixel Layout — Wide vs Narrow (Schematic)
Wide Narrow
Interlaced 1:1 checkerboard — every wide pixel is surrounded by narrow pixels on all four cardinal sides, and vice versa. Same approach as Samsung's wide/narrow pixel privacy displays.
  • Interlaced 1:1 Structure. Wide and narrow lens pixels alternate in a checkerboard pattern across the entire panel — every wide pixel is surrounded by narrow pixels on all four cardinal sides. Same architecture as Samsung's privacy display implementations.
  • Privacy via MEMS. Wide-angle pixels can be individually shuttered by the L6 MEMS array, removing their angular contribution without affecting neighboring narrow-pixel output.
  • No Dark Patch Artifacts. Because narrow pixels remain active in every 2×2 cell, the panel is never fully dark in any region during privacy mode. The interlaced structure means brightness loss is perceptually uniform — no visible grid pattern at normal viewing distance.
  • Brightness Compensation. Shutting off wide pixels halves effective spatial density. Panel compensates by boosting narrow-pixel drive — viable given the 38K nit headroom. Combined perceived brightness remains acceptable.
  • Laptop SKU Only. Camera-class XCD-LED panels omit the dual-mode microlens array entirely. No wide/narrow pixel distinction — all pixels use a single optimized lens for the sensor's optical path.
07 — On-Panel Intelligence
INTEL×SONY MERIDIAN PANEL CONTROLLER IC
Architecture
Monolithic driver IC — Intel×Sony co-development. Embedded on panel PCB. No discrete scaler, no external decoder.
Naming follows the celestial themes of the Eventide generation — Meridian is the display-domain counterpart to the on-die media engines.
AV2 Decode
On-die
Full AV2 hardware decode. Required — raw 16K@125kHz@10-bit is not serviceable over any current cable standard without compression.
Layer Split Engine
Per-pixel
Decodes unified color signal and routes per-pixel to RGB drive, MCY drive, and passthrough subpixel — using 6-primary gamut LUT.
HDR Metadata Engine
Dolby Vision 2.0
HDR10+ Ultimate
Metadata-faithful execution. Panel honors director intent. No auto-tonemapping in hardware. SDR→HDR conversion is a separate software layer (Intel/ASUS collab, host-side).
FRC Engine
~22-bit perceived
10-bit per layer → 20-bit tandem → FRC adds +2 bits (4-subframe cycle). Established precedent: 6-bit+FRC≈8-bit, 8-bit+FRC≈10-bit, 10-bit+FRC≈12-bit — XCD-LED's 20-bit tandem baseline pushes this to ~22-bit perceived. Disabled in BFI mode.
BFI / DIAC Engine
ASUS DIAC
Co-developed with ASUS. Black frames via MEMS shutter — no backlight PWM, no ghost frames. Replaces FRC when active.
Backlight Management
Zone Power Gating
Reduces drive to zones feeding MEMS-occluded pixel regions. Independent control of RGB and MCY backlight arrays.
Interface
eDP 2.5 over PCIe 6.0 ×16 ×3
Three PCIe 6.0 ×16 lanes aggregated. Not feasible over external cable — integrated panel deployment only.
08 — Optical Absorption Technology
SONY×ASUS KUROCOAT™
Technology Overview
Photonic Micro-Pyramid Absorption Coating
A fully dense, mechanically robust ultra-black coating applied to the viewer-facing surface of the MEMS shutter array (L6). Developed jointly by Sony Semiconductor and ASUS Material Science. Replaces fragile CNT-forest approaches (e.g. Vantablack) with a lithographically defined sub-wavelength pyramid texture on a hard TiON base film — achieving equivalent or superior absorption without freestanding structures.
Base Material
Titanium Oxynitride (TiON)
Stoichiometry tuned for near-unity visible-spectrum absorption. Fully dense hard film — ~20 GPa hardness. Deposited by PVD sputtering, compatible with Intel fab metallization infrastructure.
Surface Structure
Sub-wavelength Pyramid Array
Lithographically defined at Intel 04A (0.4nm-class GaNSi GAA). Feature pitch tuned below 380nm — the lower bound of visible light — placing the structure in the photonic resonance regime. Light couples into the pyramid geometry and is absorbed rather than reflected.
Absorption Mechanism
Geometric + Photonic + Intrinsic
Three stacked mechanisms: (1) pyramid geometry forces 3+ surface interactions per incident ray; (2) sub-wavelength pitch drives photonic coupling across full visible spectrum; (3) TiON intrinsic extinction coefficient converts photons to heat at each interaction.
Target Absorption
>99.99%
Broadband visible spectrum (380–700nm). Potentially exceeds Vantablack (99.965%) in practical measurement due to photonic resonance contributions unavailable to CNT forest geometry.
Mechanical Durability
MEMS-rated
Solid pyramid texture on hard TiON — no freestanding structures to delaminate. Survives 250kHz BFI actuation duty cycle. ASUS validates wear and fatigue per BWF mechanical testing protocols adapted for MEMS.
Fabrication — Intel 04A (GaNSi GAA, 0.4nm-class)
  • Pyramid texture lithography. 04A's feature definition capability establishes pyramid pitch below 380nm — sub-visible — enabling photonic resonance absorption across the full visible spectrum, not just geometric trapping.
  • GaNSi thermal advantage. 04A substrate achieves 850 W/m·K lateral thermal spreading. Absorbed photon energy (heat) dissipates rapidly through the shutter body — eliminates thermal accumulation even at 32K nit neighboring-pixel loads.
  • ASSI 2.0 bonding. KUROCOAT can be fabricated as a separate tile at 0.4µm hybrid bond pitch — clean process separation from MEMS actuator body.
Fabrication — Intel 06E (FinFlex GAA, 0.6nm-class)
  • MEMS actuator bodies. Shutter pivot mechanisms, electrostatic drive circuits, and electrical traces fab'd on 06E — proven, reliable, efficiency-biased process appropriate for high-cycle mechanical components.
  • Sub-µW idle per shutter cluster. 06E's <0.3nA/µm gate leakage and <1ns power gate mean electrostatic shutter drive circuits consume essentially zero power when shutters are held open — relevant for sustained HDR highlights.
  • IPC-biased control logic. 06E's +22% IPC advantage over 14A means the shutter timing controller handles 250kHz BFI sequencing with significant compute headroom to spare.
Why not Vantablack CNT forest?
Vantablack's CNT forest achieves 99.965% absorption but relies on freestanding carbon nanotubes held only at their base — mechanically incompatible with a 250kHz oscillating MEMS actuator. Fatigue cycling would delaminate or collapse the nanotube array within hours of operation. KUROCOAT achieves equivalent or superior absorption via solid pyramid geometry on a hard film: nothing to snap, nothing to delaminate, no process incompatibility with Intel fab infrastructure. The 04A photonic resonance regime is a capability Vantablack's CNT geometry cannot access.
† Tandem efficiency crossover at ~10K nits: Operating both emission layers at ≤50% drive is more thermally and electrically efficient than pushing a single layer to 100%. Tandem activation is automatic above this threshold.
† 38K nits is a sustained, real-world figure. Factory test ceiling of 128K nits provides ≈4× headroom margin. Shipped brightness cap is not a marketing peak.
† FRC adds +2 bits per application, not +4. Mechanism: 4-subframe temporal dithering cycle (2² = 4 subframes → +2 bits perceived). Real-world precedent: 6-bit+FRC≈8-bit, 8-bit+FRC≈10-bit, 10-bit+FRC≈12-bit (confirmed in production HDR panels). XCD-LED's 20-bit tandem baseline + FRC → ~22-bit perceived. A 24-bit claim would require two independent FRC passes on separate signals, which is not how the unified tandem output is dithered.
† MEMS black frames in BFI mode produce zero photon emission per black frame — no residual glow, no backlight ghosting. Contrast during black frames is physically absolute.
† KUROCOAT™ absorption target of >99.99% is a projection based on stacked geometric, photonic, and intrinsic absorption mechanisms. Photonic resonance contribution at 04A sub-wavelength pitch is a theoretical upper bound pending empirical validation. TiON intrinsic absorption (~99.5% per surface interaction) and multi-bounce geometry are individually experimentally established.
† Intel 04A (GaNSi GAA) — 0.4nm-class, +62% perf/mm² vs 14A, 850 W/m·K lateral thermal spreading. Intel 06E (FinFlex GAA) — 0.6nm-class, efficiency-first, +54% PPW vs 14A, +22% IPC, <0.3nA/µm gate leakage. Process characterizations per Eventide generation documentation.
† Magenta QD: Novel quantum dot formulation. Not commercially available as of specification authoring. Assumed achievable within XCD-LED development timeline.
† Color mixing LUT: Factory-calibrated per-panel. Equidistant primary splits are empirically determined per luminance target. Not fixed algorithmically at specification time.
† Privacy mode brightness compensation draws on tandem headroom. At 38K peak, shuttering wide pixels and boosting narrow pixels remains within panel operating envelope.
† Dolby Vision 2.0 / HDR10+ Ultimate referenced as current-generation targets. Final shipping spec may reflect DV 3.0 / HDR11+ pending standard ratification.
